Hi,

I m new here.  Just get registered.

I plan to buy used 1.8 altis yr 2000-2001 (due to budget constraint).  And I have been reading some postings on altis here but when you all talked about altis 9th or 10th gen, I got puzzled.  What do you all mean with 9th or 10th gen of altis?

I m currently driving a wira 1.6 (yr 1996) which I plan to trade in for used altis.  I wonder and appreciate if the existing altis owners could share their comments about things that I should be looking at in getting used altis (1.8 yr 2000-2001 or 2002 the most).

As for my wira, its gearbox gives me headache and I got really scare when come to gearbox.  How about altis 1.8 particularly?

Tks.

Dear Ibanz,

warm welcome.

regarding with the gearbox, this is really a wear and tear part and depends on the owner driving habits.

normally, generally, according to my relative which open workshop, gearbox lifespan is about 200k km... it will starting to bit jerky when changing gear... I think u experienced your wira 1.6 gearbox before (just my assumption), the gear simply shift and drag is it?

so when u get a 2000~2001 's car, you might wanted to know the "actual" mileage of the ride and test drive the car to feel if the gear shifting got weird behavior.

Dear Bro Ah Loh & Bro xing_zai,

I really appreciate the info & pic you gave both on generation of altis and its gearbox performance.

Hope you don't mind my further questions and I must thank you first for it.

1) Can I trust used altis odo meter?  I worry just in case the odo meter is manipulated and does not tell the actual mileage since mileage will be one of my selection criteria.  I have checked at mudah.my and really interested at few with low mileage.

2) What other points I should be looking at in inspecting used altis apart from test drive for geabox?  I really don't have much idea on what to look at.  My existing wira is the first car I own which I bought at EON Motoria.  It was also a used car.  Some friends warn me on white smoke.  Some even tell based on luck.  I hope, based on your driving experience with altis, you could share some comments.

tq

U ever go survey at Topmark (www.topmark.com.my), I believe is a reliable seller.
Bcoz my car bought from there.. Grin
somemore got engine & gear box warranty..
1). Odo meter I think can be reset..
Check the service manual record, u can know how long the onwer service.
from there u can calculate mileage vs. car year is it tally...
if 02 altis..I belived standard milege will around 100K km is reasonable..
after u bought many things need to service...
important is flush / change engine oil/filter, flush gear box/filter, engine decarbonize, change collant,
is a MUST

2). White smoke...the engine need overheaul..
Mine 02 year, mileage 130K...engine still very good..
during test drive..observe any white smoke from exhaust.
check any oil stain around engine compartment

faster join altis club.. Grin

ibanz,

the odo meter can be manipulate, mine was done... lols... diff when first and second test drive.

beware of the problem of drive shaft.. common problem for certain batch of Altis.. i can;t recall which batch...
1. Turn full left and right and accelerate see got weird "kok kok kok" sound come out and do some u turn (left and right) to test it.

engine wise i think Toyota is still reliable.

Cars sold in Topmark normally are more expensive than those 2nd hand car dealers.

Buying 2nd hand car is like trying your luck. My advice to you is that target the car, negotiate the price with the dealer, then bring along an experienced mechanic to check the engine and bottom of the car.

I am interested to be Altisan too  Grin

Now looking at Altis 01-02. Found one year 02 with price of RM58K. Is it worth buy?

About the odometer, there is one dealer in Kapar selling 1.6 (white colour) that very dishonest. She tampered it to 70,000KM and when i check with SC, it is more than 200KM already.
