According to Toyota/UMW website:

1.6 uses 195/65 R15
1.8 uses 205/55 R 16

Hi, everybody!

I use 205/50R16 to to replace my 195/55R16 original tyre. But some tyre shop told me Altis not suitable to use 205 width tyre because our rim size is 16X6JJ, this rim only can use 195 tyre width, is this correct? In new Altis they use 205/55R16 with rim size 16X6.5J, is it because of this reason.
I'm using Yokohama A1-drive 205/50R16, my car feel more stable on corner, but Toyota not recommand I use this size because they said will effect to tranmission, ABS..., they only recommand we use bad the very odd size 195/55R16 Bridgestone ER-30.
Pls advise, thank you!

yo guys

Im about to get my second hand Altis 2004 1.8 model next week and the tyres are bald. Rims are currently the standard 16 inch with 195/55/r16.

Any problems with gear ratio ,pickup and oil consumption if you change to 205/50/r16?

og_lp,

shudnt b n issue if u stick to d above or below 3% rule

moreover, changing from 195/55 to 205/50 doesnt affect d overall tyre OD much, so if there r any changes... u shudnt b able to even feel it as d effect is very minimal

thanks a lot tcal. i asked one of the toyota service centre guys about this. he advised to stick to the original size 195/55/r16 as changing to 205/50/r16 would increase the oil consumption. at the same time i also spoke to a guy from a tyre shop , he also tells me with a 205/50/r16 , it should not affect the gear ratio that much.

can someone over here share their experience with a 205/50/r16 ? is the oil consumption still the same as the original ?

this guy from the tyre shop recommended a 205/50/r16 Continental tyre for 260 bucks. Shop is in seremban. Is the price ok ?

My personal experience only, changed to 205/50/r16, fuel consumption went up 2 sen. Other factor may contribute to this,  rim and tyres choice.

yea mine too. was 195/55/R16, i changed to 205/55/R16 straight away fc drop from 12km/l to 11km/l. next time when i replace mine, will change it back to 195 instead of 205... save $$ save fuel

but can't deny that stability on the road has improved by using 205.

Hi guys, i'm in the same situation now. Stock tyre is 195/55/16 but different shops are recommending different sizes. Some say 205/55/16 is better, some say 205/50/16 is the best. I'm just worried that 50 series will make the ride more bumpy. Pls advise.

Diameter Difference: 0.7%
